Bet Delay in Live Betting: Why Bets Get Held
Key Points
- Live bets are often held for a few seconds before they are accepted.
- Delays protect the book from late information; they can change or reject your price.
- Your stream or scoreboard may lag behind the real action.
- Use small stakes and check your slip before confirming.
- 18+ only
- Official partner site
- Checked 5 Nov 2026
- Bet with limits
You tap a price, a spinner appears and the bet either goes through at a different number or not at all. That pause is the bet delay, and it is a normal part of live betting. It can feel unfair, but it exists for reasons that make sense once you see the chain of events. This article explains what happens in those seconds, why your screen can be behind the real match and how to bet in play without being caught out. At the time of checking (5 November 2026), BTi was the sportsbook provider seen in the L89 lobby; the exact delay rules are in the sportsbook's own help pages.
What the delay actually is
When you submit a live bet, the sportsbook does not accept it instantly. It holds it for a short window, checks the current price and the market status, then accepts, adjusts or rejects. The length of the window varies by sport and by the speed of the data feed. Quick sports such as tennis or table tennis usually have tighter and more frequent checks.
The reason is simple. Someone at the venue or watching a fast feed may know about a wicket or a point before the price updates. The delay stops bets from being placed at stale prices.
- Bet is held, then checked against the live price
- Delay length depends on sport and feed
- Protects against bets on outdated prices
Why your screen is behind
Streams are delayed by encoding, network and device buffering. Free streams can be several seconds behind, and unofficial ones even more. A scoreboard app can be ahead of a stream. If you bet based on what you see on a video, you are placing a bet on the past, which the book may already have repriced.
That is why many experienced players rely on the sportsbook's own score display rather than a separate stream, and why they avoid reacting to every ball.
| Source | Typical lag | Reliability for betting |
|---|---|---|
| Sportsbook live score | Small | Best match to prices |
| Official broadcast | Moderate | Behind the price |
| Unofficial streams | Largest | Poor |
| Social media | Variable | Unreliable |
Suspensions and price changes
After a wicket, a boundary, a review or an injury stoppage, markets are often suspended until the book is sure of the new state. Reopened markets show new prices. If you tap during a suspension, your bet will be rejected. If you tap just before a price change, you may see an option to accept the new price.
Check any setting that says accept price changes. Turning it on can get bets through but at worse odds. Turning it off keeps the price fixed but increases rejections. Pick the option that matches your discipline. See the live cricket betting guide for cricket-specific cases.
Betting in play more safely
Decide your allowed markets before the match starts. Use smaller stakes than you would pre-match. Read your slip before confirming, including the price and the stake. Never place a series of rapid bets to recover a loss. Our live betting overview lists general habits, and the late-night play article explains why tiredness makes in-play mistakes more likely.
What to do if a bet looks wrong
If a bet was settled in a way you do not understand, screenshot the slip and the market rules, then contact support through the official site or app. Describe the event, time and bet ID. Do not argue on social media, and do not open a new account. For general sportsbook context, read our BTi sportsbook article.
Bottom line: a delay protects the price for both sides, so plan your in-play stakes before the action starts.
